On March 9th a large majority of bus operators who drive in and out of the City of Airdrie voted to join the Amalgamated Transit Union. These bus drivers do the vital work of moving commuters to school, stores and to their jobs in Airdrie and Calgary.
Airdrie Transit operators are employed by PW Transit, a family-run private company who have a number of contracts in Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and Ontario. These 22 operators become the third group of employees who work at divisions of Pacific Western to join the ATU. The other locals who represent Pacific Western employees are ATU 1747 in Port Alberni and ATU 569 in St. Albert.
The ATU has had two successful organizing campaigns in Western Canada this month. Operators at AB Transit in Winnipeg joined ATU 1505 last week.
