A Tragic Loss No Worker Should Face: ATU Canada Stands with Local 416
We are heartbroken to learn of the tragic death of a CUPE Local 416 Solid Waste Unit member earlier today.
On behalf of the Amalgamated Transit Union and our 35,000 transit professionals across Canada, I extend our deepest condolences to the worker’s family, friends, and co-workers. No family should ever have to endure this kind of loss, and no worker should ever leave for their shift and not make it home.
We stand in full solidarity with Local 416 during this painful time. Workers across this country know that front-line jobs are becoming more dangerous because governments and employers continue to treat safety as an afterthought. This tragedy is a stark reminder that every workplace death is preventable, and that the responsibility to protect workers’ lives must never be sidelined or delayed.
Our thoughts are with the family, the loved ones, and every Solid Waste Management worker grieving this loss. We share their sorrow and we will continue to push for stronger protections, real accountability, and the basic promise that every worker has the right to come home safe at the end of the day.
In Solidarity
John Di Nino
