Former Canadian MP Matthew Green is Joining ATU International as Political and Communications Specialist

Silver Spring, MD - Citing his political expertise, longtime relationship with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), and extensive knowledge of transit and labour issues, ATU International President John Costa has announced former Canadian Member of Parliament (MP) Matthew Green will be joining the Union as a Political and Communications Specialist.
“I’ve known Matthew for a very long time and have been impressed with his political acumen, skills, and knowledge of our issues. He’s a community organizer at heart and has fought alongside our members for public transit as a civic leader and in the House of Commons,” said Costa. “A close friend of the ATU, Matthew will be a strong addition to our Union and a staunch advocate for our members, public transit, and working families across Canada. We welcome him to our ATU family.”
In his new position, Green will work closely with ATU Locals across Canada to provide expert counsel and assistance on critical issues affecting our members and the labour movement.
Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Green was elected as the first Black Canadian to serve on the Hamilton City Council from 2014 to 2018. From 2018 to 2019, he proudly worked with ATU Canada to advance the National Public Transit Strategy. In 2019, Green was the second Black Canadian to represent Hamilton in Parliament as a member of the New Democratic Party (NDP), serving until March 2025. As the NDP’s Labour Critic, Matthew was a tireless champion for stronger collective bargaining rights, a ban on scab labour, and justice for workers in precarious and federally regulated sectors.
“Matthew has always been more than an ally. He’s been in the trenches with us. His experience as a labour champion and his deep understanding of political strategy will be invaluable as we continue to fight for stronger public transit and the workers who make it possible,” said ATU Canada President John Di Nino.
“It’s an honour to return to the ATU family and to be standing once again with transit workers on both sides of the border, fighting for public transit, fair wages, and the power of the working class,” said former MP Matthew Green.
