John Di Nino
John Di Nino began his career in 1986 at the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) as a subway cleaner, eventually holding various positions on the shop floor, including subway mechanic. On his very first day, a union steward explained the benefits secured by the union, sparking John’s passion for labour advocacy. By age 21, he became a union steward—a role he held for 15 years—before serving 9 years as a full-time officer with ATU Local 113. In 2018, John was elected National President of ATU Canada, where he is now serving his third term.
A strong advocate for both internal and external organizing, John emphasizes political action to secure dedicated operational funding and improve public transit safety. He views mobility as a human right, closely tied to social issues, mental health, affordable housing, and climate change. Leading 35,000 transit professionals nationwide, he is proud to help deliver safe, reliable, affordable, and accessible transit to millions of Canadians each day—even under the most challenging circumstances.
John’s unwavering commitment to building relationships with affiliates, lobbyists, and communities across the country underscores his vision for a stronger public transit system. He remains dedicated to advancing the union’s mission by lobbying for enhanced safety, sustainable operational funding, and recognizing mobility as a fundamental right for all Canadians.
