Bill Johnson

Bill Johnson began his career with Calgary Transit in January 2000 as a Service Lane Attendant and has been a proud member of ATU Local 583 for over 25 years. Just three months into his employment, he stepped up as a Job Steward, marking the start of his commitment to union leadership. Over the years, he has held various key positions, including Shop Steward for VP Garage, Executive Board Member for Maintenance, Chief Steward for Maintenance/Office, and, since 2010, Recording Secretary for Maintenance/Office—a position he continues to hold today.

During his time with Calgary Transit, Bill worked as a Service Lane Attendant, Fare Box Puller, and Fleet Attendant. His decision to run for his first Job Steward position was driven by prior union experience and a deep desire to support his fellow members. That passion remains just as strong today, as he continues to advocate for better working conditions and fair representation.

Bill has also served two terms on the ATU Canada Board, contributing to national efforts that benefit transit workers across the country. Most recently, in November 2024, he was elected President of the Calgary Transit Sports and Recreation Association, further demonstrating his dedication to fostering a strong and engaged membership.
