Financial Secretary

Aleem Tharani

Local 113 – Toronto, ON

Aleem Tharani is a second-generation transit worker who has dedicated his career to public transit and union advocacy. He began his career in public transit in 2007 as a maintenance worker at the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), becoming a proud member of ATU Local 113. Growing up in a union household, Aleem learned early on the value of a strong labour movement and the benefits of a good union job. His commitment to supporting his fellow workers led him to become a Shop Steward, a role he held for three years before being elected as an ATU Local 113 Executive Board Member at Large for Maintenance. Now serving his fourth consecutive term, he continues to advocate for the rights and well-being of transit workers.

In addition to his leadership within Local 113, Aleem is currently serving his second term as Financial Secretary of ATU Canada. His dedication to the labour movement extends beyond the ATU, as he is also in his third term on the Executive Board of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council and serves on the Executive Board of the Labour Education Centre. Aleem is an active member of several key initiatives, including the Job Action Committee, Political Action Committee, and the Keep Transit Public campaign, all aimed at strengthening workers' rights and ensuring accessible, publicly funded transit for all.
